Galaxy Nexus, Viper and Optimus Elite now available on Sprint

Sprint Android phones

Today sees the launch of three new smartphones on Sprint's network. First up is Google's current flagship device, the Galaxy Nexus. Sprint has the CDMA/LTE variant, which is very similar to the Verizon LTE version currently doing the rounds in the U.S. There's the same 720p HD SuperAMOLED display and 1.2GHz dual-core CPU that GNex owners have been enjoying since late 2011, and we're sure Sprint customers will be eager to get their hands on their very own version of the current Android flagship.

Next up is the LG Viper, an entry-level 4G LTE device for customers looking for a good all-round LTE smartphone. Inside you'll find a 1.2GHz dual-core processor along with NFC, Google Wallet and hotspot capability on top of a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display.

Finally, there's the Optimus Elite, which we got to play with just a few days ago at its launch event.  It's definitely an entry-level device, with a 3.5-inch HVGA display and 5MP camera. But if you're not looking for anything too fancy from your Android smartphone experience, you could definitely do a lot worse.

Earth Day and every day gardening with children

Earth Day ? or any day ? is the peak time to be gardening with children, sowing the seeds of a lifelong habit.

With Earth Day upon us, not to mention the warmer and longer spring days, many of us have been heading into our gardens. Around much of the Northern Hemisphere, this is the peak time to sow some seeds into the ground, as well as plant a lifelong gardening habit into the children in our lives.

Gardening helps families spend time together outdoors, take pride in growing our own food, and connect to others who have lived on the land before us. Even though gardening offers a bounty of simple wonder, beauty and fun for even the smallest children, it doesn?t hurt to employ a few methods for getting and keeping them especially engaged.

Here are some simple ways to maximize your child?s interest in the garden.

Are you a Helicopter Parent? Take our quiz!

Let children select some plants they want to grow.

Something magical happens when one has ownership of a project from its initial stages. When choosing plants, check that you have the right growing conditions for them to help ensure a successful experience. Planting information is available on seed packets and through garden-supply store folks, who are generally very helpful. You can choose seeds, young seedlings, or a combination of the two. Seeds are more cost-effective and can be especially rewarding and wondrous. Bedding plants of course give your garden instant color.

Some plants that come up quickly, and are easy to plant and grow, include nasturtiums, peas, sunflowers and beans.

(As an aside, my daughter always chose marigolds to plant, just like I did I when I was a kid. They?re so colorful and cheery and happen to be easy to grow from seedlings or seeds. Perhaps many children are drawn to bright marigolds.)

Chop chores into small blocks.

Kids can lose interest if the project seems daunting. Try to break up the tasks into doable chunks and over more than one session if necessary.

Make a sign that identifies the garden, area, or container as the child?s.

The sign can be as simple as a painted rock or as ambitious as a mosaic-tile kit from an art-supply store. If other people are sharing the garden, you can still identify different children?s plantings by putting each name on a wooden stick (available in bags at garden-supply stores) in permanent ink.

Create a fun space in the garden.

Create a hiding place with trellises or plantings, or plant a sunflower house by planting sunflowers in the shape of a large playhouse that you can later go inside. (Leave room for your door!) Designate a tree stump to serve as a table for tea parties, or decorate an area with whimsical objects you make or find. For instance, use pipe cleaners and beads to make simple butterflies, ladybugs, mushrooms and flowers, and then place them among the plants.

BP oil spill two-year anniversary marked by somber statistics

Friday marks the two-year anniversary of the massive BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf Coast. While the FDA says the local fish are safe to eat, several new reports suggest that local wildlife and the overall environment continue to suffer from damaging effects of what many consider the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

The Associated Press reports that a number of fish in the Gulf are suffering from visible maladies, including, "open sores, parasitic infections, chewed-up-looking fins, gashes," and " "mysterious black streaks" along their bodies.

On Wednesday, BP sealed an out-of-court settlement for $7.8 billion with lawyers representing thousands of individuals and businesses affected by the spill. However, the company released a statement insisting that seafood in the region was safe for human consumption.

"Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world, and, according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident," the statement reads.

While the evidence of continued and extensive environmental damage is "nowhere near conclusive," the damage appears to have extended beyond marine life to the Gulf's deep-water coral, seaweed beds and other species of plants.

There is lots of circumstantial evidence that something is still awry," said Christopher D'Elia, dean of Louisiana State University's School of the Coast and Environment. "On the whole, it is not as much environmental damage as originally projected. Doesn't mean there is none."

A federally funded study conducted last summer by scientists found that 3 percent of sampled fish had gashes, ulcers and parasites symptomatic of environmental contamination, according to lead researcher Steve Murawski, a biologist at the University of South Florida.

"The closer to the oil rig, the higher the frequency was" of sick fish, Murawski said.

'Hot Girl Problems' confirms Internet hates teenage girls

Campaign season can make presidential candidates do crazy things, but it's not often one resorts to hacking into a computer and stealing 700... Read more

2 hrs.

Thanks to their awkward and tuneless YouTube video "Hot Girl Problems," two 17-year-old girls from Los Angeles have the dubious distinction of being dubbed "the next Rebecca Black."?

Why? It's not that we need a new version of the adolescent girl behind "Friday," the Auto-Tuned masterpiece of mediocrity which became 2011's cool thing to hate. It's just that ? well ? when you work in the media, adjectives can be hard (apparently). It's just easier to call pretty much anything "the next blah blah blah."

And while "anti-bullying" is all the rage, it's still cool on the Internet to hate on teenage girls ? especially if they're acting like ? um ? teenage girls. ?What's more, you don't need to be a troll in a chat room to do it, you can work in the media as well.?

Thanks to main stream media coverage, "Hot Girl Problems" -- performed by "Double Take" (Drew Garrett and Lauren Willy) has more than?than 2 million views and 71,000 "dislikes."?

Here's a sample of how it's been covered:?

"'Hot Problems' might just be the worst song of 2012 -- if not of all time" is the headline ABC News went with.?

"These "hot" girls' problems are now everyone's problems," reads the first sentence in a snark-filled story on the girls from the Huffington Post.?

"The Video That Destroyed my Faith in Humanity," headline's The Next Web's post.?

True enough, it's an awful video.?The girls speak/sing in that annoying nasal tone of ... well ... teenage girls. Meanwhile the lyrics -- tongue-in-cheek or no -- aren't much better.?For example: "Boys call me stuck up; girls say I'm conceited, on behalf of all hot girls, those comments aren't needed."

I know, right? It sounds like something ... um ... teenage girls would say.

Which is my point exactly.

Yes, yes, you?re very astute. I am, indeed, a member of the media whose actual job it is to make fun of stuff on the Internet and as such, the last person in cyberspace who can safely throw stones. But?I bagged on this story when it first went ?viral,? because, as I told my boss, comedy ain?t funny when it mocks those without power. These girls may or may not enjoy more privileges than others their age, but they?re still teenage girls, and that?s a comparatively powerless thing to be, especially on the Internet.?

If we've learned anything from the deadly combination of Twitter and Justin Bieber, it's that teenage girls can be annoying and obnoxious, and especially to each other.?True, Garrett and Willy have aged out of the True Belieber crowd, nearly aged out of high school, and if they're even remotely familiar with the hate fest that is YouTube comments, they can't be surprised to see themselves slammed. But --?and this can't be stressed enough --?they are teenagers. And yet, with "Hot Girl Problems," Internet girl hate goes mainstream.?

Before Rebecca Black -- who was harassed by 4chan's infamous /b/board --?we had Jessi Slaughter. You may remember Jessi from her now-deceased father gave us the meme quote, "consequences will never be the same." Jessi's obnoxious quest for Internet fame resulted in death threats and worse.

Then there's Angie Varona, who at 14, became a star of Reddit's underage girl-oogling forums when her photos were scraped from her Facebook profile and other online accounts. As Gawker's Adrian Chen noted, "Young girls who try to be famous are cut down in a rage of vicious comments and death threats. And young girls like Angie Varona who aren't trying to be famous? That's just a turn on, whether they like it or not."?

Those ?girls gained their uneasy Internet fame thanks to forums such as 4chan and Reddit. Now that "viral" equals "news," capricious gals don't need?Internet trolls to make them famous in the worst possible way. Mainstream media is happy to take the helm.

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on ?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

$1 million for a penny; one of world?s rarest coins sold at auction

Click photo to view more images. (Scott Olson/Getty Images)Click photo to view more images. (Scott Olson/Getty Images)One of the first pennies ever produced by the U.S. Mint was put up for auction Thursday night and reportedly sold for more than $1 million.

Bids for the 1792 Silver Center penny reached $1.15 million Thursday night, according to Heritage Auctions, which conducted the sale. The U.S. Mint itself was founded in April, 1792.

If you don't have $1.15 million on hand, there are more affordable rare coins available. The Canadian Mint recently began selling a limited-edition glow-in-the-dark quarter featuring a dinosaur skeleton for around $30.

And the website ThinkGeek offers electromagnetically shrunk quarters for $25, or 100 times their actual value as currency.

ABC News reports that the rare penny is made of copper with a small silver plug at its center. It was an experiment by the then-fledgling U.S. Mint, which shelved the penny before it could go into mass circulation. The U.S. Mint determined the penny was too large and heavy for practical use.

Todd Imhof at Heritage Auctions told ABC that unlike today's legal tender which bears the inscription, "In God We Trust," the copper-silver penny reads "Liberty Parent of Science & Industry."

"At the time, industry and science reflected an enlightenment mindset," Imhof said. "People believed freedom of thought and industrial growth would bind and unify the new country, not religion or God."

An anonymous collector who has owned the coin for 10 years sold the penny. "With collectible items, for an item to sell for over a million dollars it is an unusual event," Imhof said.

However, Imhof also said a coin of the same type sold for close to $3 million over a year ago. Still, the $1.15 million sale is one of only 30 $1 million-plus coin sales in history.
