Business travel seems to be bucking the downward economic trend with a five per cent growth in transactions through GTMCGuild of Travel Management Companies members during the second quarter of the year.
While the overall UK economy shrank by 0.7 per cent between April and June, transactions through the GTMC members went up to 4.2 million, compared to 4 million for the same period in 2011. This was despite the extra bank holiday in June for the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.
Air sales were up by two per cent for the quarter year-on-year while rail and car hire grew by 14 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. Only hotel bookings stayed flat for the three-month period.
Sales for other services including consultancy, ferries, visas, meet and greet, and foreign exchange were up by 10 per cent during the quarter.
GTMC chief executive Anne Godfrey said: ?Once again the business conducted by GTMC members seems to be slightly better than that being reported elsewhere.?While not spectacular these figures show that, with caution, things are better than may have been expected.?
John Williams, general manager at the GTMC, added: ?The static figure for hotel transactions may reflect anomalies due to the Olympics. It will be interesting to see what happens in the third quarter.?
Over the last 12 months, overall transactions for GTMC members are up by five per cent to 16.8 million compared to 16.1 million during the previous year.

God's love is colour-blind. Not so, it seems, when it comes to the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi.
Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson, an African American couple from nearby Jackson, were all set for their big wedding day on Saturday at the 150-year-old church that they have been attending regularly for months. The sanctuary of the church had been arranged, the rehearsal was set for Friday, invitations had been sent out to friends extending a "special thank you to the First Baptist Church and members".
Then, at about 5.10pm on Thursday evening Te'Andrea received a call. Some of the congregation of the church, which is largely white, had seen a group of black women setting up the sanctuary for the wedding and complained to the pastor.
"If the pastor married her, because they were black then they would vote him out," Te'Andrea was told. The wedding was off.
"When I got the news I couldn't believe it at first," Charles Wilson told the Jackson Clarion-Leader. "This is not a matter of colour for me, it's about God, and what better place to get married than God's sanctuary. God's love is colour blind."
Wilson confronted the pastor, Stan Weatherford, and asked him what had happened. According to Wilson, he replied that he had "received all sorts of phone calls, text messages, and it was just not going to happen".
Later, Weatherford told the local channel WLBT News that weddings of black couples had never happened before in the church, "so it was setting a precedent, and there were those who reacted to that". He added: "I didn't want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn't want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te'Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day."
Wilson said he liked the pastor but still thinks he should have taken a stand. "If you're for Christ, you can't straddle the fence. He knew it was wrong," he said.
The ceremony was switched to a neighbouring Methodist church and went ahead with Weatherford officiating without further ado.
Paradoxically, the Southern Baptist Convention, America's largest Protestant denomination, has elected its first black leader ? Reverend Fred Luter of New Orleans.
The objections of the First Baptist members did not reflect the unanimous view of the congregation. Some expressed dismay at what had happened.
Casey Kitchens told the Clarion-Ledger: "This is a small, small group of people who made a terrible decision. I'm just ashamed right now that my church would do that."
Officials of the First Baptist Church are planning to hold a meeting on how to proceed. Charles Wilson is also considering his next move.

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression
Friday, July 27, 2012In one of the first studies to look at transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in real-world clinical practice settings, researchers at Butler Hospital, along with colleagues across the U.S., confirmed that TMS is an effective treatment for patients with depression who are unable to find symptom relief through antidepressant medications. The study findings are published online in the June 11, 2012 edition of Depression and Anxiety in the Wiley Online Library.
Previous analysis of the efficacy of TMS has been provided through more than 30 published trials, yielding generally consistent results supporting the use of TMS to treat depression when medications aren't sufficient. "Those previous studies were key in laying the groundwork for the FDA to approve the first device for delivery of TMS as a treatment for depression in 2008," said Linda Carpenter, MD, lead author of the report and chief of the Mood Disorders Program and the Neuromodulation Clinic at Butler Hospital. "Naturalistic studies like ours, which provide scrutiny of real-life patient outcomes when TMS therapy is given in actual clinical practice settings, are the next step in further understanding the effectiveness of TMS. They are also important for informing healthcare policy, particularly in an era when difficult decisions must be made about allocation of scarce resources."
Carpenter explains that naturalistic studies differ from controlled clinical trials because they permit the inclusion of subjects with a wider range of symptomatology and comorbidity, whereas controlled clinical trials typically have more rigid criteria for inclusion. "As a multisite study collecting naturalistic outcomes from patients in clinics in various regions in the U.S., we were also able to capture effects that might arise from introducing a novel psychiatric treatment modality like TMS in non-research settings," said Carpenter. In all, the study confirms how well TMS works in diverse settings where TMS is administered to a real-life population of patients with depression that have not found relief through many other available treatments.
The published report summarized data collected from 42 clinical TMS practice sites in the US, and included outcomes from 307 patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who had persistent symptoms despite the use of antidepressant medication. Change during TMS was assessed using both clinicians' ratings of overall depression severity and scores on patient self-report depression scales, which require the patient to rate the severity of each symptom on the same standardized scale at the end of each 2-week period. Rates for "response" and "remission" to TMS were calculated based on the same cut-off scores and conventions used for other clinical trials of antidepressant treatments. Fifty-eight percent positive response rate to TMS and 37 percent remission rate were observed.
"The patient outcomes we found in this study demonstrated a response rate similar to controlled clinical trial populations," said Dr. Carpenter, explaining that this new data validates TMS efficacy in treating depression for those who have failed to benefit from antidepressant medications. "Continued research and confirmation of the effectiveness of TMS is important for understanding its place in everyday psychiatric care and to support advocacy for insurance coverage of the treatment." Thanks in part to the advocacy efforts of Dr. Carpenter, TMS was recently approved for coverage by Medicare in New England, and it is also now covered by BCBSRI. "Next steps for TMS research involve enhancing our understanding of how to maintain positive response to TMS over time after the course of therapy ends and learning how to customize the treatment for patients using newer technologies, so TMS can help even more patients."

Last Sunday we had a baby shower for Sara & Grace. A lady bug theme! My BFF, Jocelyn and I worked all day Saturday to cook and decorate. It started at 12-3pm, open house style, the first half of the day was Sara's work friends...school friends...her Father's side of the family and my scrap girls. From 3-6pm, it was my family, Dwen's family and good family friends. Head count was 78 people, we made ham and turkey sandwiches with pasta salad for the lunch crew and Taco/nachos for the dinner crew. My daughter, my grand daughter and myself are so very blessed to have so many wonderful people in our worlds. Sara got TONS of stuff...the kid won't need clothes until high school! So very blessed! This is a photo heavy post....

I received this message through my contact page and since it?s the kind of question a lot of people have, I thought I?d turn it into a blog post.
I am 31, married, and working as expatriate away from my husband. Not only that I have an extremely high libido but also I am using sex as stress relief, so we have an understanding that we can have an open marriage as long as it doesn?t complicate matters.
My issue here is how to ask men for sex without engaging into a relationship. I am very communicative and emphatic, so men easily fall for me. This I have no nerves, energy or wish to deal with. I am interested only in sex. What should I do? How to approach them?
It?s amazing how often this kind of thing comes up. Lots of women who are looking for partners say that the men they meet don?t want to get tied down, while the ones who are looking for a non-exclusive lover often run across guys who want to turn it into a relationship. It probably says something interesting about people (or at least, men who have sex with women). In any case, there are a few things you might try to increase the odds of finding someone compatible with your needs.
First off, are you looking for men who are already familiar with open relationships/polyamory? Although the overall pool is smaller, it?s worth starting with men who are in that world because they?re more likely to understand what you want and be on board with the idea. In fact, you might even find a guy who?s looking for a lover while his partner is out of town or something similar. If you?re not sure where to look, check out polyamory.com. In my experience, you?re more likely to find success if you can find partners who understand what you?re looking for and are seeking something similar.
Whether you go that route or not, I think that one of the less recognized skills of open relationships is managing attachment. I?m talking about attachment as bonding, not attachment in the Buddhist sense of the word. For example, my partner and I are in an open relationship and one of the ways that we manage that is that we don?t do sleepovers. After a date, we go home, take a shower, and sleep in our bed. That?s because sleeping with someone (and I?m using that word in the literal sense, not as a euphemism for sex) is usually very bonding, especially after having sex with them. Scents and pheromones have a way of increasing connection, so limiting that can keep things from getting entangled.
Other people have guidelines like limiting how often they get together with someone, or how often they talk on the phone/email/text, or what kinds of sex they have. I know people who will get together with a lover for drinks, but not dinner. Or who will split the cost of dinner, rather than letting the other person pay for it. Or who might get dinner with a lover, but not do more ?date-like? things such as going to a movie.
Since there are different approaches, I definitely suggest reading Tristan Taormino?s book Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships. While there are other great books on the topic, Opening Up has a lot of info gleaned from the author?s survey of over 120 people in different open relationships, so you?ll have more ideas to work with. The book also has lots of resources and community groups, so that will probably help you find like-minded people.
Another way you can maintain some distance, as well as your safety, is to have a very frank and honest discussion with each potential partner about your safer sex limits. I?m a big fan of Reid Mihalko?s safer sex elevator pitch as a really useful model. And stick to your boundaries- sometimes, we want to shift them as we get to know someone and feel more comfortable, but it?s important to keep them consistent. Not only does that protect you, it also keeps your sexual relationship from drifting in the direction of a romantic relationship.
Some people also maintain some distance in their sexual relationships by making their other lovers topics for conversation. I?m not suggesting that you gossip about your partners or turn dinner into a processing session. Instead, if you say things like ?I got an email from a lover of mine about this issue that I know you?re interested in?? or ?I was talking with my husband on the phone and?? That can help keep the person you?re with from forgetting about your husband or pretending that he doesn?t exist. If a guy can?t handle that, then odds are he can?t handle what you want, anyway.
On the flip side, how much do you tell your husband? I know that a lot of people have ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policies, especially if it?s happening at a distance. But I?ve seen that lead to even more complications in the long run. In any case, if you do tell your husband about your other relationships, it doesn?t have to be in detail. And simply telling a potential lover that your husband knows what you?re up to can help keep things transparent. It also reduces the chances that your lover will think that he can get you to break up with your husband.
It?s probably a good idea to familiarize yourself with New Relationship Energy. NRE is that feeling at the beginning of a relationship when we often become a bit obsessed with someone, we have difficulty seeing their flaws, and we want to spend a lot of time with them. It?s part of the bonding/attachment process and often lasts about six months, give or take. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also lead us into deepening a connection more than is good for us. It takes some practice to ride it without letting it ride you, which is why I suggested seeking men who are familiar with open relationships and creating some boundaries to maintain some distance.
