It would be hard to imagine a time when the seat Mack Brown is sitting in could ever be considered hot, but times have changed. The 61-year-old Brown is set to begin his 16th season in Austin and despite a record of 150-43 overall, there are some who believe the legendary coach?s time is up. Perhaps it?s his record over the past three seasons: 22-16 or the fact that his teams haven?t gone to a BCS bowl game since 2009. Whether it?s fair or not, Mack Brown is a coach on the hot seat in 2013.
The Buzz: There was a time period when Mack Brown owned the state of Texas when it came to recruiting. If you were a four-or-five-star recruit and you were from the state of Texas, you wanted to play for Brown. That?s no longer the case. Thanks to the recent dominance of the Southeastern Conference and a more concerted effort by programs to recruit the Lone Star State, Texas no longer is guaranteed to top recruits in the state. The Longhorns had the 17th-ranked recruiting class in 2013 with only one five-star recruit. The previous season, Texas had the second-ranked class with only two five-star recruits. Part of that can be attributed to major change on the Texas coaching staff. Former defensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp left to take the Florida job in 2011 and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin left this offseason to take the head coaching job at Arkansas State. Then there is the Red River Rivalry, the annual game between Texas and Oklahoma. The Sooners have won the past three meetings including the last two games by a combined score of 118-38. While the program isn?t in a free-for-all, there are cracks starting to show. A strong run at another Big 12 title and possibly a BCS-bowl appearance would do a lot to stem the tide of opposition against Brown.?
