Keep Your Pet Safe During Spring Projects - Atlanta Real Estate ...

Spring has sprung! As we embrace the warmer weather by doing some spring cleaning or outdoor gardening, heed these seasonal tips from the Georgia Veterinarian Medical Association to prevent mishaps to your four-legged family members.

Spring Cleaning & Home Improvement

  • Keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets? reach.
  • Products such as paints, mineral spirits and solvents can be toxic to your pets and can cause severe irritation or chemical burns.
  • Be cautious of physical hazards including nails, staples, insulation, blades and power tools.
  • It may be wise to confine your pets to a designated pet-friendly room during cleaning and home improvement projects.

Let Your Garden Grow

  • Keep fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides out of reach and follow label instructions carefully. They can be fatal if your pet ingests them.
  • Avoid cocoa mulch. Cocoa is the main ingredient in chocolate, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Many popular springtime plants?including Easter lilies, rhododendron and azaleas?are highly toxic to pets and can easily prove fatal if eaten.

Ah-Ah-Achoo ? Allergies

  • Pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens.
  • Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause minor sniffling and sneezing as well as life-threatening anaphylactic shock.
  • If you suspect your pet has a springtime allergy, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.

We want all members of your family to be able to enjoy the season, so be sure and keep this advice in mind as you start your spring projects.
